40 Years of Chiropractic.... A Look Back / A Look Ahead

It was 40 years ago March 15, 1985 that I crossed the stage at Palmer College of Chiropractic.

My Dad also a Palmer graduate handed me my diploma and off we went. We left Davenport Iowa the very next day and moved to Nashville, Tn. Yes in Music City I started practice with my Dad on White Bridge Road and was there 3 years before opening in Franklin on January 4, 1988. Franklin was a small farm town with a population of 10,000 people. That has changed now being in excess of 80,000 people and growing rapidly. As a ” Baby Boomer ” I have seen more changes in our culture, society and of course technology than any other generation to date. In health care and chiropractic I have also seen a lot of change. I remember I once sent a patient back to her medical doctor for a medical problem and I sent the patient’s x-rays with her to save time and expense and the patient returned crying because her medical doctor took the x-rays and simply dropped them in the trash. Now days the medical folks stop by the office to introduce themselves and ask for us to send patients to them. In the old days a chiropractor did mainly adjustments and maybe a therapy.

Now days chiropractors do physical rehab, nutrition, dry needling, acupuncture, Knee injections and ion baths for neuropathy and cold laser. It seems the adjustment may not be that popular anymore, at least with some chiropractors.   Looking ahead however I see the chiropractic adjustment making a come back. Research is demonstrating how effective an adjustment actually is and the benefits provided by the adjustment.

There is research going on in Australia by some of the top researchers in the world. They are finding out adjustments increase muscle strength by 16 %. When comparing Olympic athletes and their performance, they found a 16 % improvement in those athletes that were under chiropractic care compared to those that were not. They also found that chiropractic adjustments also improved brain wave activity when monitored electrically.

Yes I think that just maybe there is a lot more merit to chiropractic adjustments than we even so far know about.
